State of Florida
JOHN H. ARMSTRONG, MD, FACS, was appointed by Governor Rick Scott as Surgeon General and Secretary of Health for the State of Florida on April 27, 2012. A graduate of Princeton University, the University of Virginia School of Medicine and the US Army Command and General Staff College, Dr. Armstrong believes that education and training are drivers for change. Dr. Armstrong came to the Florida Department of Health having previously served as the Chief Medical Officer of the USF Health Center for Advanced Medical Learning and Simulation in Tampa, where he worked to bring health care professionals together through hands-on team training.
As a student, trauma surgeon, educator and health policy leader, Dr. Armstrong has made innovative thinking a hallmark of his career. As a student, Armstrong’s choice to major in economics anticipated the trend for liberal arts pre-medical education. As a surgeon, he advanced patient-centered clinical team protocols, and as an educator, he pioneered trauma team training programs using simulation and clinical settings. Completing his 17 year career as a Colonel in the Army Medical Corps, Dr. Armstrong served as Director of the US Army Trauma Training Center in Miami, where he led the development and implementation of an innovative and award winning trauma training program for military medical units deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan. Dr. Armstrong subsequently served as Trauma Medical Director at the University of Florida in Gainesville, and was recognized as an Exemplary Teacher in 2011. In health policy, he has served as a national leader for performance improvement, older driver safety, and disaster readiness.
Dr. Armstrong advocates for healthy choices by Florida’s children, adults, and families. He is an Eagle Scout, enjoys pool time with his family, and is an avid jogger, having completed 2 marathons and a number of half marathons to date.
As a public servant, Dr. Armstrong is driving innovation, collaboration, accountability, responsiveness, and excellence for the health of all people in Florida. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Armstrong.
