Rita King has over 25 years’ experience in healthcare. Starting with health insurance companies in Southern California (PacifiCare), she migrated to working for providers (Huntsville Hospital) when she moved with her husband to his home in Alabama. One of her first volunteer activities was for the local American Heart Association, and she was startled by the sobering statistics on the CDC’s Heart Disease map and noticed that they seemed to vary drastically from state to state. Having worked for start-up companies (CaliforniaChoice) and skilled in growing departments, she turned her eye to helping those insureds make the most of their plan and how they could benefit financially by becoming healthier.
Currently, Rita serves as the Vice President and Benefits Consultant for BBVA Compass bank. The employer group has 12,000 employees with over 20,000 lives on the Health Plan located in 16 corporate sites and over 750 branches in seven of the Sunbelt states, and expanding… There she oversees the health and welfare for the company, including management of the medical plan, pharmacy, mental health, EAP, wellness, and the Employee Health Center (with another on-site clinic to be added next year). All benefits, including Virgin Pulse, are organized under the “Wellthy for Life” wellness program and coordinated between the associated vendors for a fully integrated approach. The latest change is truly to move the needle by focusing more on outcomes rather than solely on participation. Having implemented the wellness program when she started four years ago, she has seen engagement increase and the number of health fairs double.
Enjoying this level of success and desiring other employers to experience the same in their wellness programs, she has been asked to speak to 20 other companies about BBVA Compass’ “Wellthy for Life” model at the Birmingham Wellness Committee, of which she is a member. As part of a separate but related HR initiative, Rita hosts the Live Well webinar learning series where a different medical or wellness topic is featured every month and broadcast to the entire footprint. She is presently involved in efforts underway to incorporate financial wellness into the picture for a well-rounded method of addressing overall health.
Rita received her Bachelors from Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma in Pastoral Care and Counseling with a minor in Music and an added emphasis in Mathematics. She enjoys singing, sign language, and spending time with her two Maltipoos: Atom and Daisy.
