Tom Sondergeld is currently the Sr. Director of Health & Well-Being, Human Resources at Walgreens. Tom has directed employee benefits for over 20 years. He led a successful implementation of both Hewitt Associates/Aon Corporation and Northwestern Memorial Hospital’s wellness programs and on site Health Centers/Services. His role at Aon Corporation also included the first successful roll out of a Corporate Private Exchange to company employees. In his current role at Walgreens, he is responsible for the overall healthcare model and administration for the over 250,000 team members. He is currently implementing the AonHewitt Private Healthcare Exchange to the over 170,000 eligible team members at Walgreens for 2014. He is also charged with developing an integrated disability model for the organization. Tom has spoken at many local and national events on topics ranging from HR Software solutions, Human Resources process improvement, benefit outsourcing, benefit plan design, wellness integration and on-site health centers in the workplace. Tom holds a Bachelor in Psychology and a Masters in Healthcare Administration. He is an active member of many HR groups with SHRM, HRMAC and SHRP among them.

Tom will be presenting on the topic “Walgreens Own Prescription for Employer-Sponsored Healthcare: The Live Well Benefits Store, A Private Exchange Solution.” This session will cover Walgreens move to a Private Exchange in 2014. We will examine the process to the decision, the design and features, the results, and lessons learned as the country’s largest pharmacy employer moved in this direction. Some pointers about team transition will be covered as well.

Mr. Sondergeld will also present the topic “Onsite Clinics: From a Vendor to an Integrated Healthcare Solution.” This session will cover how Walgreens as an employer has integrated their onsite and in-store clinics into the overall healthcare strategy for Team Members. We will explore the challenges employers have with integrating clinics, examine methods to better integrate with other healthcare initiatives, and will look at data integration opportunities. We will also demonstrate how onsite and near-site clinics cut healthcare costs directly.
